Description
Hello All: First time caller, long time listener.
A client of mine had me install steel stud & cement board around a fireplace that she had installed. Her designer wants the tiles "to look they go around the corner"; with no butted edges, he means mitered for sure......lots of cutting.....lots of time.....no prob. I suggested using some kind of a Schulter trim; he said he doesn’t like the look of them. The client wanted the front of the fireplace surround flush with the cement board so the tile would attach directly to that. I’m going to mesh tape and mortar the seams of the cement board, and the corners too. I was told the surround gets warm. What would I use to attach the tile to the steel surround? Mortar? PL? Brian mentioned about the cement board and surround expanding at different rates. How would I address the joint all the way around? Roughly 5ft wide 8ft. high 1.5 ft deep of tile area. Could I get away with mastic for this job? Any comments would be great.

There are no thinsets that I'm aware of that are acceptable for bonding to metal.
A high heat RTV type silicone may be your best bet to bond the pcs that sit on the fireplace box surround.

I keep wondering about the transition..the joint where the metal and cement board come together. If you attach the tile to the metal, and it expands with heat..will you get a crack along that joint?
