Description
I poured slc over my radiant heat mats used same procedures, times, and ice water and the whole floor is perfect except the one dark section at the back. Stayed dark and looked wet even as everything else turned gray. The section is hard, I banged it with a hammer and the bond seems good, but it is cracking all over. I cannot figure what went wrong. Area was primed twice before pouring. These pictures will tell the story. Big question is what are my options. I dont want to write off $500 in heat mats. Thank you.

Is that EZ Flow from Home Depot? I ask, because I like that stuff as far as SLC's go..but that happens to me all the time too...just in spots. I have no idea why it happens...shrink cracks maybe. But...the bond always seems good even with the cracking..and since I always put Ditra over top, I don't worry too much and nobody has yelled at me yet. So...keep and eye on it and keep tapping to see if it's hollow the next few days..if you can wait I mean.

Yes it is the ez flow from home depot. I was concerned because the cracks are opening up a couple millimetres at least. Any idea why it stayed so dark (almost wet looking) and the rest of the floor cured perfect. I was wondering if they put that patch leveler in the wrong bag.

It's hard to say. I can't imagine they put the wrong product in the bag. The one thing I do hate about HD is that they let people return cement based products. Who knows how long that one bag was sitting in some guys basement before he decided to return it...and of course, it goes back into stock. The colour difference could be as simple as the Hickson company buying cement from more than one supplier...so they have some bags with Lake Ontario Cement in them, and other bags with St Marys Cement in them. Anyway, that SLC will shrink the most in the first few days..so like I said, keep an eye on it to make sure it's still bonded. You might want to try contacting the U S E Hickson company and ask what the deal is.

Thanks Bri, I just fired off an email to hickson and I will see if they reply. So you think that in a few days if it is still bonded I will be okay even if the cracks are about a 1/16" wide?

I don't see why not if the floor is solid. Those cracks will fill with thin set anyway. Hickson will probably tell you to fill them with SLC..but unless you have any left, I sure wouldn't buy more for that. I'm pretty sure you will get a reply..I seem to remember them replying to me a while back. They are part of that Henry group now...and they make great products..so I am sure they will want to keep the customer happy.

On a side note...doesn't drive you nuts when you do everything "by the book" and stuff like this happens? Grrrr! wink

Thanks Brian, hopefully it does stay solid because if I had to chop that up and destroy those mats my wife would make my life miserable. Once again thanks.

Hello Jettech; I was wondering if you ever got a reply regarding the cracking in the Slc? Did you fill the cracks with thinset then lay your tiles?
Thank You
Scott
