I would like to brighten up my kitchen back splash by installing tile. Can I install tile over the laminate back splash. This would be the entire area between the upper cabinets and the counter top which is also laminate. The kitchen is very boring because the counter top and the back splash is the same color.

We did something like this for our own kitchen and for the countertop you should install a cement board over top before the tiles are installed. I made sure to secure the back, underneath section of the counter first. This was based upon an installer's advise. I don't know about the backsplash though because mine just had bare drywall to cover which was easy.

The problem with tiling right over the laminate is that it's hard to tell how well the laminate is glued to the wall. If there is future movement there, it'll cause your grout to come popping out, and there's no simple way to fix it. It would be much better if you nailed 1/4 in. cement backer over the laminate and attached your tiles to that.

John's right, you probably won't spend much time or money installing the cement board and you'll have it done right. It's so darn annoying replacing grout every couple of months because of too much movement.
