Im about to tile my first Sauna floor.
Any advice on what to use.
If you could tell me the substance and not the product names that would usefull, as they are different names here in the UK.

'Ello,'ello Danny \:\)

Is this sauna floor to be sloped toward a drain? Are you building the rest;the walls and benches, with cedar or redwood?

I'm assuming that you are setting tile on a concrete slab, right?Could you give us some more details...size of room, type of tile, etc too?

Not sure of full details yet.
All I know is I'm only tiling the floor not building anything else.
When I get the full spec I let you know.
Thanks.

Hi Danny

Looks like that Bal Single part flexible, is the same as the modified thin set we use over here. I used the Bal gold star with latex additive when I worked on my brothers place in Devon. I also use the GRIP premixed stuff for wall tile..it works great, but is so thick it just about rips your arm out of the socket to spread the stuff ;\) In the sauna you would best to use the Bal Single Part Flexible...I think \:\)

thx Bri, I use the premix grip stuff all day every day, you should see my right forearm.
Just did a composite marble tile on a bathroom wall, used the bal ctf3, good stuff.
I will give the single part a try.
I'll send in a pic of the finished job.

Hi Danny

I was involved in a really nice modern Finnish sauna room.It was two rooms really, divided by the doorway for the hemlock sauna. The floor had a drain by the door which was in the centre.I built a sloped floor with flat sections(to be tiled with 12" porcelain tile). Then I installed Schluter's Kerdi membrane to waterproof the floor. It was difficult to mud the floor with a proper slope according to the layout of the 12" tile but it worked out well.

Beside the sauna on the same sloped, tiled floor I built a steam shower. The customer wanted to be able to hose down the sauna once in a while, therefore the sloped floor with drain. The wood when washed would secrete some of its oils and colour and ended up on the floor tile and grout.Luckily,I had sealed the grout.Although next time I will use epoxy grout on such a floor.

I wouldn't use a premixed adhesive in such a moist area.Only thinset mortar. Not familiar with Bal adhesives or mortars.

Found out its just a small sauna somone is having in there loft conversion, what we do with our lofts here in london is convert them into master bedrooms, with the price of property being so high.
So it will only be a 3 meter square floor with no drain and on ply.
What do you think, ditra?
I think what you call thin set mortar we call adhesive.
Check the link see what you think.
I think I will use epoxy though.
I was just saying to bri I know the problems with premix tub gear we have here called super grip, gives you arms like popeye. \:D

Hey Danny

For that sauna on ply, I would recommend the KERDI system..with the drain and the membrane, you really can't loose.
