HI

Has any one used this new product, Rhino Board, from Home Depot? Please give feed back. What GTA retailer carries 4*5 1/4" Halex and what is the cost per sheet?

Rhino board isn't really new, but to answer your question, I find it to be a little brittle. Nails or screws too close to the edges will break off peices. I also had one fall over in the garage and it broke into about 5 peices, even though it didn't hit anything. Hardiboard which is a similar product is more stable and easier to cut.

As far as the Halex is concerned, you'll have to wait for Harry to come by...I've never seen the stuff either. \:\)

Brolain Distributors carries Halex and I'm not sure of the price. It does what cement board and other fiber panels can't do. It strengthens the floor with the same ability as 5/8" thick plywood. The stuff you need is the 3/8" thick, not the 1/4". The 1/4" thick Halex is designed for vinyl floor coverings. It's also water resistant.
They also have a Lifetime Warranty on their product if tile is installed to manufacturer's recommendations.

If you need added strength without too much height increase then Halex is the product to use.

I just tried the 3/8 Halex last week. Great stuff.
Could not bring myself to try and staple it in place. Ended up screwing it down.

Harry, what do you use to fasten Halex ?

I ended up paying $29.50 for the 4x5 - 3/8
One of my other suppliers has it for about $25.00 a sheet.

I use 1-1/2" staples with 1/2" crown, I hate using a screw gun. ;\)
I don't like promoting one brand over another when they both do the same job, but I don't think there's another product like Halex out there yet. Personally I hate using plywood products instead of cement products but when the increase to strength is substantial .... we just don't have a choice.
I'll try to put a specs page together for this product and if anyone knows of anything similar, I'll add that too.
