I've been reading a lot on this board and one the their website about this product. I've just bought a house and have two fairly major projects in mind for over the next year. I want to move my laundry area from the basement to the mainfloor (into a spare bedroom across from our washroom) and in the void left where the laundry once was I want to put in a small bathroom (shower, toilet and vanity/sink).
Though I'm hardly an expert in the field (or maybe because so) I'm thinking of using wedi for my waterproofing/backboarding. It looks as easy as a snap to work with. I understand it is quite pricey compared to the alternatives but I must admit I am swayed by the idea that it seems so easy to work with.
A couple of questions:
1) Am I way off base thinking I can put this stuff down, and on the walls and then simply put lino over it on the floor, place a prefabbed fiberglass shower enclosure and put up rot resistant gyproc on the walls (which is my current plan for the bathroom... not sure if I'm up to tiling... but that remains to be seen). For the laundry room I was simply going to use it on the floor with about a 6" rise along the walls, with the floor sloped towards a drain in the middle of the room i case of floods (subfloor is joined wood over 2 X 10 on 16" centers)

2) Any idea where I can get this stuff (or like product) in Eastern Ontario. The woman at my local HD looked at me like I had two heads when I asked her about it.

There's no point in useing Wedi if your not tiling anything.

You will defininately need the services of a qualified plumber and tile installer to get a proper drain and sloped floor with waterproofing completed.

This type of project is far more demanding skill wise than you may think.

Well thanks (I think) for the response RC. Guess I should have explained that I have laboured on a few bathroom installs before (while in college), so I am fairly comfortable with the roughing in and plumbing aspect. I suppose the idea of putting in the wedi board was as a hedged bet in case I decided to go ahead and either take a stab at tiling myself or hire someone (if the money held out). Furthermore, I was thinking after I posted last night that it may not be 100% necessary to slope the laundry room floor. I mean main bathroom floors are not normally sloped and they are typically far more at risk of getting wet then are laundry floors...

Anyone got an answer to question 2 above?

Not sure who has it out your way. I have begun to buy it through Tilemaster ... call them and they may be able to direct you to a supplier, or perhaps go to the Wedi Board website and look for retailers.

It isn't meant as an underlayment for vinyl sheetgoods, so perhaps re-think this after you find out more information.
Good luck.

Actually its the other way around. Normal day to day use of a bathroom with a shower may only see a very small amount of water on the floor from a open shower door or person once they get out.(especially kids)

It's when the washer malfunctions or a hose bursts that will deposit gallons of water on your before you can catch the problem.( I know because it happend to me)
