cement board versus backer board or can i use both in different situations ?
I live in new york just out side of city so our winters are not really that bad compare to up state new york .
to prepare walls , around tub i read 15lbs felt paper stapeled to 2x4's then cement board
(durock) ,with screws ,adhesive then tile .
to prepare floors ,plywood over subfloor then
mortar bed then backer board. roll on plastic barrier then adhesive then tile .
Is this right ?

Hi Cynthia .... cement board is backerboard, as is Denshield, Greenboard and WediBoard etc.

For your bathroom floor perhaps Ditra isolation membrane would be best depending on the stability of your floor. An extra layer of plywood (as you've indicated) is never a bad idea. But not always necessary.
Size and spacing of joists would be helpful in providing you the best advice.

Use a proper vapor barrier on your walls behind cement board. 6 mil poly is ideal.

What do you mean by "adhesive"?
Use thinset mortar.

Hi Harry ,

I enjoyed your pictures . You are a master of your craft. I admire you .I appreciate your dedication . I am thankful for this site.

I have been reading all i can on this site for days and i realized that i had to let my contractor go . .

so now here i stand with my bathtub at the curb and 20 or more black bags filled with my old tile and debris in my yard .

My contractors men put up regular sheet rock in tub area . When i ask him about this, he told me they made a mistake and would take it down .

I was asking him all these questions with the knowledge I've been learning on your site .

He was a big talker and i wish i was strong enough to punch him out .

He told me he would put up the right stuff .

I now have a bathroom with greenboard on walls .
felt paper and cement board around shower .
floor with boards on joist with 1/4 inch plywood on floor.

He left all the supplies, sanded grout ,tube of
adhesive ,screws ,etc.

I am going to clean up the house and get ready for Thanksgiving.

I am looking forward to my bathroom in the future but right now i need a little break .

I wish you good health .
