Hi there,
About a year ago I tiled my tennants bathroom using ceramics over greenboard. In my inexperience I failed to add a vapour barrier. There is no fan in the bathroom but there is a large window that opens and is used. I tiled all around the window. Over the weekend I had a chance to check on the condition of the tiles and noticed that along the window edge underneath the sill tiles, the grout has cracked. It has also cracked all up and down one corner, outside the tub. How should I approach fixing this?
With silicone? Or do I need to scrape out that old grout and re do the cracked areas?
Thank you.

Hi
On just about any tile installation, you will have to use caulking in these areas....inside corners, the joint along the tub, and around the window opening, since it will probably butt up against wood or vinyl. If you can remove as much of the grout as possible in these areas and replace it with either silicone or latex kitchen and bath caulking, this will help absorb movement in these areas so that they don't crack again, keeping water from going behind the tile. \:\)

I'd also add that if you own this property that it would be a really good idea to install a fan in the bathroom. My house that I am renovating also has no fan in the bath and let me tell ya.....major steam, dirt, and the smell is bad. The vapours are just continually working their way into my walls, mind you, I'll be ripping out that bathroomin a couple of months..........Just something to think about.
