Hello there tile installers!

Most of you guys would appreciate this. I know I did when I handled the phone call. Already talked to Bri about it and he thought I should share it with you guys.
I recieved a phone call the other night and was asked the repeated question HOW MUCH PER SQUARE FOOT? Well before I give a price I asked what the jobe was. She told me the house was relatively new and she had hardwood installed 2 years ago. The problem is their dog scratched all of it up and she wants to go with ceramic tile. (about 500 square feet) Ya I can handle that. So I proceeded to explain to her that the hardwood would have to come up before tile went down. No that is wrong. She had been told by TWO different people that she could put 1/4 inch underlay down directly over top of the hard wood and lay tile on that. Well I tried too explain that this is not the best way to go about this and that I am not your guy to do the installation. Then she told me that she was willing to pay me 600$ to complete this job. I am not sure what drug she is taking but just a tad out there I would say. Anyway after the end of the conversation and still trying to be nice she asked me for anyone elses name that I would recommend. Bri you were first on my list. Gotta laugh at some people and wonder where they get there advice.

why did she have a problem with taking up the hardwoods seeing she was willing to put plywood down? if she calls you back you can let her know that here, the install would be around $2,500.00 plus tax. $600.00 is an insult.

Hey Danny...how about the Mutts? \:D

Trigger and I live in the same area of Ontario, and we are forever trying to get people to do the jobs correctly, and at least get paid a decent wage to do it. Everyone(well almost) wants it done for nothing, and yesterday.

They want the job done yesterday? .... they're willing to wait that long where you are? \:D

Hi Trigger, it's hard to explain the facts to people sometimes .... but I don't think it's always the customer's fault. Usually they seek advice from supposedly reliable sources and end up with stupid directions for their project. Much of the time the salespeople haven't a clue as to proper procedure and materials for specific jobs.

you are right Harry. Some people do get the wrong advice and we are left trying to explain that they are wrong. Usually it is a personal friend or someone that has done work for them in the past and they trust their advice. So then they ask us and we know nothing. Fortunately I only have to deal with this a little bit. But still it really gets to me when ther are others outthere that think they know it all. That gets to me.

My latest story is 18" tile over subfloor in new house.... No additional underlayment. Har har. Guaranteed failure.........GUARANTEED. The carpenter is going to do the job, he's also the one that educated her. Oh well. Total price on just the tile was $2200....thats going to be an expensive mistake.
