I posted in the basic forum, but maybe this question belongs here.

My tile guy wants to set 121 sq ft of tile in one day, which includes a bathroom floor and shower surround....and then come back and set it the next day.

Is this wise? I always thought you were supposed to wait at least a few days before you grout.

How would he do the shower surround and side of tub AND the floor without damaging the set floor tiles? He plans on doing a mud-bed prep. I just don't see how he can do this.

I haven't hired him yet as I am not sure if I want to pay him his roughly quoted fee. I'll post my previous post so you can see what the job details are {and to save me some typing:-)}

"I haven't selected the tile yet, so his price is based on labor only and the cost of the tile I select would be additional money.
Everything is prepped except on our bathroom floor there is 3/4 inch plywood screwed down which he wants to remove and do a mudbed instead. Otherwise everything is ready for tile. The job breaks down as follows:

Shower surround: 65 sq ft
Bathroom floor: 25 sq ft
Bathroom backsplash: 5.75 sq ft
Kitchen backsplash: 25 sq ft

He suggested I pick custom tile such as marble or limestone and geared me away from using ceramic because it won't hold up, especially in the shower. What is good for the shower...porcelain? I don't think I want to spend a lot of money on marble or limestone in the shower because whatever I select for the shower surround will be going on the floor to match! I was looking at tumbled marble as an option only for the kitchen.

And I want a simple pattern...not a lot of cuts. I want the granite counters in the kitchen and bathrooms to be the main attraction and the backsplash and oother tile to fade in the background, yet compliment it subtly and elegantly.

Beside the price, I am concerned about how he thinks he can set all the tile and then grout it the next day. Isn't that breaking some rule? How can he do the bathroom floor and shower surround in the same day and still work in there without damaging something? He seems awfully expensive, too."

Terry

Just want to let you know that I appreciate your advice and to clear up a few things...there is no shower pan to be tiled. I have a tub in place and he will be tiling the side of the tub, 3 surround walls, the floor, the backsplash. He will do a mud base on the floor. I selected travertine and will not have excessive cuts...but I will have some diagonal tiles framed in on the part of the backsplash over the range. The backsplash in the kitchen is 25 sq ft total.
Also, when I was at an upscale tile store a few days ago, I asked for a list of tilesetters. The lady said as she gave me a sheet with about 10 names on it that she can't give personal recommendations. After I saw my guy's name on it and mentioned it to her, she exclaimed that this guy is a master craftsman and did the owner of the store's home and that he is awesome! All this after she says she can't give a recommendation tells me he must be really good.
I will be using him and swallowing my practical side...I just hate to spend this kind of money...but it will probably be very beautiful and worth it!

Just curious as to why a Mud Base on the Floor? Is this in the Bathroon with the tub? Is there a drain located in that bathroom Floor? Thanks..

If he's the kind of guy who's doing mud work to correct the existing surface ... he's already in my good books.

He sounds like old school or perhaps has learned from someone who is old school.

Let us know how you make out with your project.

Terry the Tiler,
I find it interesting, that the lady in the up market tile shop, said. "She couldn't recommend any tilers" however she gave you a list of ten tilers names. In Aussie, it would be deemed that she is recommending all ten!
From what I have read about the Tiler, Quoting on your job, he must be one of us "Dinosaurs" so pay your money and let’s see the finished job.
Regards Old Stonemason
P.S. We always grout next day!
