We recently had our hall and kitchen tiles replaced with porcelain tiles in different sizes the largest tiles being 20 x 20. A number of these large tiles were from a different lot and the color does not match. To have these tiles replaced about 1/10 of total installation, what will this do to the integrity of the rest of the tiles, floor and grout etc??

Hi Abby

Could you tell us what you have for a subfloor now? Removing tile will in a lot of cases, damage the floor under it. If it were a concrete floor, it wouldn't be a problem. Wood, scratch coat or cement board is a differnt story.

Hello Brian,
Thank you for replying. Our original floor is plywood which was tiled with ceramic. The ceramic was removed and from what I can see from basement ceiling looking up there are hundreds plus plus nails coming through the plywood which left wood slivers all over the basement floor. We were not here when the tiles were removed and the new ones installed. So that is all I can tell you.

You have wire lath and scratch coat by the sounds of it. Not a good thing!

If you start banging on the tile pcs to get them out, chances are the scratch coat will start to disintegrate and also break the bond on the adjacent tiles.

Hi

I agree with Randall....it does sound like they used wire lath and scratch coat(all the nails you see downstairs are holding the wire down to the plywood subfloor) Can you remove one of the grills from the floor heating ducts and see if you can notice what is under the tile? By looking at the edges where they cut the tile around the hole, you can sometimes see what they used..like a cut away profile. If you can see or feel some of the wire lath, then it will be very difficult to remove individual tiles without damaging or loosening surrounding tile and/or grout. \:\(
