I was called to look at this job because the grout was cracking and falling out.I was asked if I could just repair the grout only.

Customer had this floor done by a person who was highly recommended to them. I was also informed that they paid top dollar for this installation.

As you walked across this floor it also made a slight popping sound, almost everywhere.

As you can see there's more of a problem than just the wire lath and scratch. NO Bond to the tile whatsoever. This scatch job is also over the original vinyl and mahogany underlay.

Needless to say it's all coming out.

I did a job a few years ago with tile that had that kiln dust on the back. I had to wash every tile to remove it. What a pain. Still, scratch coat over vinyl...what were they thinking?

hmm weird. I still would have thought that the thinset would have bond well to the concrete. Looks to me like the thinset had skinned over by the time he installed the tile or something

we had that problem once before, the final take was that the thinset did not stick to the porcelain tiles, this could be due to the improper thinset. Looks as though from your pictures that the thinset did not bond proprly to the tiles. I also agree, what were they thinking over vynal.
