Just got a call from a guy who wants to turn his bathroom in to a shower. 7x6 room, drain centered. shower plumbing on one wall, toilet on another, pedistal sink, door. Cant drop floor-so wants a curb at door. What kind of door that would get spray. Im most worried about electrical switches and outlets in a shower. House is 110 years old. He does not want to get a permit. I know this type of job is done thru out the world-i just havent done one....yet

I'm assuming he wants to make a wet room.
Electrical codes may be different for your area.

Here,no switch can be within a 3'reach if standing in an area where there is a shower. All outlets and lighting must be GFI protected and not in any direct path of shower spray.

Trust your common sense on this one. If you personally do any of the electrical without getting a permit, you would be held liable for any injuries resulting from non code compliance.

Thank you Randall for your input. I am only building pan and setting tile on floor, walls, and ceiling. But i feel -as a professional- that i should not just do what the homeowner wants- but to do what he needs-and to tell him that. I understand the whole floor will get wet from the spray of 2 heads. The electric outlets and switches are installed. The plumber and electrition are just doing what he wants. I dont want to be liable.

In my experience, when something happens, (in this case, fire, electrocution), the lawyers have a tendency to sue everybody who was on the job for any reason, then let it get sorted out in court. Usually, they're hoping your insurance company will settle for some amount.

Either way, you go through a heck of a lot of trouble and expense trying to clear yourself. Let someone else have that job and move on to something less risky.

You probably wouldn't be liable Rob unless the plumber and electrician are working for you. The electrician might be doing what the customer wants, but should still be following his codes for the conditions his work will be effected by.
Normally here in Ontario I require the rough drawings for the plumbing in order to obtain a permit from the city if I'm doing renovations that require me to alter the existing plumbing and walls ... the electical details aren't required for the permit because his licence allows him independant freedom .... which also means the buck stops in his lap.
But ... I agree with you that someone needs to step up to the plate and make sure this project is done right. But as far as liability .... seems like the customer would only be able to sue the contractor ... who is himself.

Oh ... and don't forget to take your camera if you take on this project.

Could he not have the switches outside the room? As far as outlets, what about a cover for exteriors. I'd imagine there must be some kind of platsic coated door out there, can't say I've ever seen one though. What about a frosted glass door in a metal frame?

Where is the ventilation fan? If it is anywhere near the shower it will have to be connected to a gfi. It might be easier to find which circuit(s) serve the bathroom at the panel and install (or ,have the electrician install) a GFCI circuit breaker.

Thank you all for the comments. I think I'll take Kmans advice and price myself out.
