Guys, new to the post. I searched and couldn't locate the answer to this. I purchased 2x2 porcelane tile, comes on a 12x12 mesh sheets. However, the style I chose is rustic looking with pop marks and uneven edged etc. The spacing is poor between the tiles on the 12x12 mesh sheet (wide in some areas and very small in others). Under it is already the Schluter memberane and tray.

Question: Should I just remove all of the tile from the mesh and install them one by one to ensure proper spacing. Or just install it as-is and use unsanded grout throughout so I make sure the grout gets down into those finer spaced areas. Some of the tiles are even touching in spots.

thoughts? I appreciate your responses! and thanks in advance.

You do not want to remove and set one at a time. Some mosaics are perfect straight, some are off on purpose to give a more rustic look, and some are just crap(defective) poorly made in mexico or china. You need to decide if yours is rustic (Which you dont like) or defective. I take it that all the sheets are consistant and you have a problem with the tiles touching-no joint. I would remove one tile here and there that are touching. To do so by not pulling the tile and streching the web but cutting the web, and reset and use blue painters tape on face to hold in place. Or if they are really rustic first try hammer and chissel and chissel the tile edges on the sheet.
If any of the joints are wider than 1/8 " then use sanded grout. Just go over the tight joints well.
What do you mean-under it is the schluter mem and tray?

Thanks a bunch for the info. The stuff you mentioned does sound easier to do. There are some joints over 1/8" so sanded grout it is. Cool thanks!!

For the schluter I wanted to mention that if it made any difference what-so-ever which I imagined it would not have.

Hi
Don't try and cut through the mesh while it is in place though...you don't want to damage your waterproofing under the tile. I has been done. ;\)

Right on. I have dry fitted all of it to see how it lays out and have already cut out a few rows so everything is going smoothly. I made sure I cut well while off the floor. The foam tray makes me very nervous.

My only other concern is trowel notch size. I saw a video on youtube (http://youtube.com/watch?v=fyjMI6XQw_c) where a guy had problems with his small tile on the floor, his was 3/4 tile where mine is 2x2. The comments mentioned that the guy might have used too much mortar or the wrong kind.

I have Megabond by Laticrete. I passed on the extra additive they sold with it. The bag just mentions 1/4 x 1/4 and 1/4 x 3x4
trowel size but references only the sq footage is covered. Another bag I looked at and some research on the internet said for tiles smaller than 8" to use 1/4 x 1/4. I was curious if I should go smaller with my 2x2 tile and if so what size.

thanks in advance again. You guys have been awesome!

if a small size notched trowel is needed for 2x2 tile. Would it be 1/4 x 3x16 or 3/16 x 5/32?

The 1/4 x 3/16 is what I used to install the schluter waterproof membrand and it seemed to spread a good amount of mortar for even 2x2 tile. ok, i'll shut up now and let the experts tell me what to do. Have at it boys.....

Hi Todd
The 1/4"x 1/4" square notched spreader would probably work just fine. The importance isn't the amount of mortar as much as it is coverage.
Also, use your rubber grout float to pack (lightly pound) the tile into the mortar.

A good rule is use the largest notch possible for most coverage. Trowel-set tile-lift tile and see that you have mortar on entire tile. Too much would be if you press down on the tile and it rocks back and forth and the mortar comes out in the joints. When you bed the tile you want no more than 40% of the joint filled with mortar. If the tile back is smooth i like to use 1/4 v notch at a 45 degree angle. If its a ridged back i like a 1/4x1/4 square notched at a 45 degree.

If you have a steady hand you can do touch ups on mosaics after they are set with a small grinder and a diamond dry cutting disc. Just widen any narrow grout lines a bit. You don't have to cut all the way through the tile, just half way to prevent damage to water proofing. I did a whole swimming pool with 1" tile that way and it saved a pile of work on all the round corners.
