Hardibacker isn't waterproof either. For waterproofing, you need a membrane such as Kerdi, or a paint-on waterproofing such as Redgard.

You have pulled out the shower surround and are planning to tile up the walls from the tub, correct?

If the sheetrock in the shower area is in good shape you can add a bunch of screws, two coats of redgard and tile directly on that. No need to mess with hardi.

However, the framing and drywall in old bathrooms is seldom in good shape. It's best to rip everything out, check for mold and plumbing problems in the walls, then straighten and re-inforce the studs as needed. Then re-install drywall and kerdi or redgard over that.
