Hello! I am building my second shower, my pics from the first one are on this site. The problem I have with this one is that I am converting a tub to a shower.

If I installed the drain where the pipe currently is, it would end up falling behind the drywall. I bought some ABS pieces shaped as an S to move the drain slightly, but I would have to cut the pipe deep into the ground, and how would I do this?

Would I be able to leave the drain where it is, and just recess the bottom portion of the drywall and studs so the drain was actually 100% in the shower area? Kind of like building a shelf, but at the bottom.

I Google'd an offset shower drain that was not for preformed shower basins but could not find one. Are these available?

Thanks for any help!

The best way would be to move the drain to the center of the floor. You can cut a trench about 3" wide from current location to the center. You'll probably have to cut a larger hole at the new location. Install the trap directly under the drain, then slope the pipe at 1/4" per foot to hook it back up where the old drain was.

I use a grinder with a masonry blade to score the concrete, the use a demolition hammer to bust it out.

Is there anyway to extend and/or move the trap over 2 inches so I don't have to bust out more concrete and build another trap? My shower is 3 x 5 so I don't mind if the drain is on one end and build the appropriate slope.

You'd have to dig the trap out and extend the drain line however far you need to get it away from the wall.

Oops. Two more questions.

1 - I assume I need to drop the remaining rocks and dirt back in around the P trap, and then do a 2" or so concrete floor around where I busted it out. I have foam to cover the ABS drain pipes.

2- Do I follow the exact directions for the shower pan if I am building on a concrete slab, ie- the slipsheet and mesh? It's been 6 years since I did my first one!

Thanks!

I usually just fill in the hole with gravel to the bottom of the slab, then fill it in with dry pack mud or concrete, either is fine.

For setting dry pack on concrete, you don't need the wire or slipsheet. Comb a little thinset onto the slab as you go along to bond the dry pack to the slab. Make the thinset a little wetter than normal.
