Thanks for the info Randall, I will have to look into it. A tile shop in Guelph called ceramic decor had some leveller by Mapei called "Ultraplan easy" ever use this stuff? It says the pot life is 10 min. What does this mean? Does it mean that is how long it can sit in the bucket? Thanks for your help.

I have never used Mapei's self leveling products.
Pot life is the maximum amount of time the product will last before it is no longer workable.
Most SLC's are in that same time frame. They actually start to set up before the 10 minites is up. Needless to say you need to be really organized in your set up, mixing, cleaning buckets and placement. This is why I suggested either extra help or an alternate method if your trying to do this by yourself.

The Kiesel product I use is called Servoplan D 800. It has a processing time of approx. 30 minutes. It's the only SLC that you can actually trowel or screed that wont screw up the matrix of the SLC. It covers from 1/8" to 1-1/2" in one shot.

FYI, Tilemaster is also the dealer for Wedi board. If your floor is flat, that's what I would use based on your proposed installation requirements.

Hi, I am back and have finally got around to buying the slc that I need, but have a question before I start. I primed the area of my floor with the required slc primer, but could not lay the slc that day because my helpers cancelled at the last minute. My question is how long will the primer stay good for. It has been 2 days and I cannot do the pour now for another 3 days or so now. Will the primer still be good now that I already put it on the floor without installing the Slc. Thank you.

Hi J

The SLC primers I have used all say 24 hrs max once the primer has been applied. You should reapply a coat of primer and let it dry before you mix and pour the SLC.

Did you put in foam expansion strip around the perimeter of the room?

Hi Rob, thanks for the prompt info. So to get this straight, I already have laid 2 coats of primer on my floor in anticipation of doing it the other day. Now I can put a third one down prior to laying the slc and it should work no problem? Also I have heard on this site that some guys mix 2 bags of slc in a garbage can for quicker pours, can you mix the 2 bags with a 1/2 " drill in the garbage can for the same amount of time as it says on the bag or do you have to extend the time since you are doing 2 bags at once? Once again thanks.

Yes, the third coat of SLC primer is fine because the other stuff has long since dried and lost its effectiveness. You should verify this by reading the instructions for the specific brand of SLC that you bought.

As for mixing the SLC...two bags together with the correct amount of water will still require the same amount of time for mixing. One reason that I buy Laticrete SLC is that it has a pot life of 30 minutes. That lets us mix all the bags in multiple buckets, let them sit, give them one final mix with the drill, and then pour in on continuous shot.

Thanks for the reply Rob, I shall check with the manufacturer of the primer to be sure, and regarding the 2 bags at once I wa s just thinking that since I was only using a 1/2" drill with that much slc at once it would take longer to get it all mixed to the right consistency. Once again thanks.

Hello everyone, Well I laid a 3/8 inch layer of slc last night and it flowed great but what I noticed was there was parts of it that looked a milky gray colour compared with other parts that were dark. Now that it has dried there are parts that are whitish compared with darker parts. I mixed everything as per manufacturer instructions. Is this ok for the slc to be like this? Thanks.

Who's product did you use?
I've seen it go like that with EZ Flow. It seems to happen if you spend too much time screeding the mix. I think their additives start to separate when you push it around too much. Thats just my theory. wink
You should be ok.
