Hi. I'm building a shower. I'm using the Kerdi kit and I put down the floor portion and the first part of the drain yesterday.
I was getting ready to start waterproofing the walls and someone here said something about - the thinset wont work on drywall mud... I have new "green board" (now purple) on my walls all the way around, and we patched up the screws and taped and mudded the seams...
now I'm ready to put on the kerdi...
can I ? or do I have to primer the walls, and if so, what do I primer with?
I have a gallon of BIN Primer (it has shelac in it)... so would that work?
or am I freaking for nothing?

I'm also wondering about the big round hole I'm supposed to put in the wall around the mixing valve... Right now, the mixing valve doesnt have much of a hole at all.. is that big space necessary? (seems to be pretty standard by the looks of the kit piece...)

AND...
after putting the kerdi on the shower last night, I realized this evening that there is text on one side of the kerdi fabric - is there a "right side" and a "wrong side" to this stuff?

thank you

I'm cutting kerdi - but not going to do any waterproofing until I hear back if I'm alright to do it over the smoothed drywall material...

It's that danged compound that's the problem. Thinset doesn't stick to it very well. Sorry, I don't know about that particular primer you have there, but yes it will have to be primed.

You can actually use a smaller hole, but cutting the larger hole allows you access to the valve if you have a leak or need to replace it.

Doesn't matter which side of Kerdi faces the wall.

thank you!
Trying to primer now - with the BIN primer - it comes highly recommended - and I need to prime the whole room - so that's what I'm going to do... especially seeing as it looks like I wont be waterproofing for another couple days - time enough for the primer to dry well.

thank you much I'll keep you posted on progress (and I'm sure I'll have more questions

Larry, no.
the guy helping me papered and used drywall joint compound in the seams.
apparently the thinset will not adhere to joint compound, so I was advised to primer (those parts)...
I ended up primering the whole wall ...
its a mess

and then I discovered -that I've been doing all this work - but did not know I was supposed to be using some kind of additive in the thinset -

so I have literally been playing in the mud
I pulled it all down
and washed it all off - with plain water -
and I'll be starting over again - tomorrow.

sigh.
but no - you dont need primer unless you have "finished" your drywall.
