Hello everyone. I am trying to figure out how to fasten my suntouch heat mats to the cement floor of my room. I laid a layer of slc to bring some height up, and now am in the process of laying my heat mats down and then pouring a second layer of slc to set the mats and achieve the right floor height. The mats come with tape to fasten them to the floor. I think that the slc that will go over top will not bond to the tape, I was wondering if I could use a glue gun and glue them down or would this also interfere with the slc adhering. Thankyou.

Go with the manufacturers recommendations. If you're not sure call their technical support #. The normal way to glue down mats is with a thin layer of fairly runny modified thinset, but I've not done suntouch before.

Thanks for the info. I called suntouch and they said I could glue the mats down. Well I covered the mats in 1/4 " layer of slc and I can still see in areas there are a bit of mat strands showing that maybe lifted up a little from me moving around the slc. Is this a problem or can I just lay ditra over it and start tiling?

You want the floor as flat as possible. You might have to skim coat the protruding areas to get them flat.

Skimming it sounds like a good idea. Thanks.

Quick question about skimming. Could I skim the slc with modified thinset, and then when dry put the unmodified under the ditra or do I have to skim the bumpy areas with unmodified? basically will modified when dry stick to unmodified put over top? Thanks.

Modified thinset will be fine. It's not going to be covered for a while, so it should dry.

Hello everyone, you guys must be sick of me by now. I installed radiant mats in my floor, covered them with a layer of slc, some parts of mats still protruded through, you guys said to skim it with thinset and I should of listened. I called the slc company about the issue and they said I needed to pour some more slc over it, so I primed the floor twice and poured about 3/8" of slc over it around 24 hrs ago. Half the floor came out great and the other half looks like it was poured 5 min ago it is really dark and has cracks in it now. Do I have to demo the floor and kiss goodbye to $500 worth of mats or is there some other way out of this. Thanks.

This seems to be a continuing problem I see from the EZ Flow SLC.
Is it possible for you to post any photos of the problem areas?

When I first started with their product, I had the same issues. I always had to cover the SLC with Ditra because the SLC seemed to be of questionable integrity.

I don't know what to tell you without actually seeing the problem. If you post some pics I may have a recommendation.
