I guess it's in pounds? Seems like it spit out about the right # at me. That's one of the things I have liked about sub contracting for a flooring store: I get to bill for most of my hours, as they do the estimates, billing, deliver materials, etc. Sure I only get $30/hr, but I get a cheque every 2 weeks and I get to see my kids.

Your extremely lucky Pistolpete to see that kind of money working as a sub for a retail store. Your lucky if you can even come close to that as a self employed tile setter by the time you calculate the operating costs of your company.
Retail stores in my area pay by the sq ft no matter how difficult the job is. That's why I don't work for any of them.

I still have to cover my vehicle expenses, tools, and disability insurance. That amounts to about $5000 a year, or $2.50/hr.

I think that more important than the money is the fact that they don't argue much about my high quality standards. Occasionally I get asked to install on subfloors that I don't consider adequate, but when I explain my reservations and the fact that they are the ones warrantying the install, I usually get my way.

Actually on larger jobs I get a square foot rate of $3 to install, which usually ends up better than $30/hr.
