I have enter into a contract with a residential customer. We initially have a base agreement. After signing the customer has changed their mind and teetering on choices. The contract says they are responsible for purchasing and choosing the materials.
(A) I initally was going to install a neo angle shower with prefab base and doors that's what the contract says. I will be Tiling the shower walls and other areas.
(B) Then they changed their mind to a tiled shower base (which led me to this forum)
(C) Then they opted to have Glass Block walls and a 27" door.
(D) Now they can't agree nor decide. He wants glass block (noe angle style)and she wants a Belly shower door (which will now require a curved curb). They have already got the shower floor tile.
I'm ready to tile hall, laundry and bath floor. I'm preparing a Change order ammendment to the contract but can't put a number to it for I don't know what the want now. ARGH!
Any suggestions. should I hold off on the whole job till they Have decided, considering I have ripped their bath apart. I can't wait for Delivery of goods or delays. They are very nice people and their happy with my progress. What to do?

If anything thank's for reading my rant.

I wouldn't start on any particular part of a job until they have made up their minds on it. The way my luck goes, I would get it finished to a certain point, then they would decide on something that would require me to demo some of my work. I'm sure if you explain it to them that way, they'll make up their minds pretty quick. As long as you're making progress, I'm sure they'll be happy, but when your progress slows or stops, they'll realize they need to get with the program.

Just make sure you get the change order signed after they make up their minds.

The way I do my contracts is to specify the work to be done and who is supplying materials etc.
There is also a statement in my contract which says that after the contract date any changes to the work specifications will be charged on a time and materials basis.

That way it doesn't matter if they change their minds on the scope of the work to be done. You are not going to loose money.
If there are change orders, do not wait until the job is done to get paid for them. Invoice and collect those charges immediately.

Most clients will respect those clauses and make all the final decisions right up front when they know it may very well cost them more money for waffling on the construction details.

Just as a heads up, this is just a little a red flag. Once the job starts you may be in for some nasty customer relations.

Hope it works out for you.
