Hi

I Picked up a Bag of Keraflor and ultraflex 1 today for a Ditra install

$15.00 Keraflor

$15.00 a bag, is this Dry-set good for setting porcelain tile with the Ditra. I don't want the tiles to crack because I was cheap.

Should I try and find something else $$$ wise

(I read you should not set Porcelain tile with a Dry-set mortar, but doesn't mention Ditra )

Thanks

Kyle

Keraflor is just a cheap unmodified thinset. For over Ditra, setting porcelain I would use Kerabond. Don't be tempted to cheap out on the thinset quality when it comes to setting.
As for cracking and cheap thinset, that's only one part of the equation. There are other factors that are more important such as floor structure. The most expensive thinset isn't going to prevent the tile from cracking if the subfloor system isn't good enough or installer error in setting.

Schluter installation specs trump what the thinset manufacturers bags say. Go with what Schluter specs out.

I would assume that you have an OSB or plywood subfloor since you purchased Ultraflex 1.

Yes the Sub-floor is 2x8 16 O.C Joist with 5x8 T&G plywood

Wow KeraBond,I will see if I can do the $40 a Bag

Whats your takes Ultraflex 1???

Schulter says to use Ditra-set but you can't buy that in CDN and then says to use Karabond/Keralastic.

I was shocked at how much the jug was

I guess i will go back to rona and have a look and see the price again.

Have you Personal used Keraflor,I just wonder why they still sell it if it's junk.

Thanks grin

Kerabond is not $40 a bag.

And nowhere does Schluter say anything about Kerabond /Keralastic.
They never specify any manufactures thinsets, other than to say unmodified or modified.

Ditra-Set is not manufactured by Schluter nor is it sold by them.
It's made by Bostik and is the only thinset that Schluter has actually aligned their name with, however that may change.

I did not say Keraflor was junk, just cheap. Remember, you get what you pay for. It's marketed to the box store because it's cheap and thats what their consumer market targets.
Ultraflex 1 is in the same category. Just a cheaper modified thinset. It will work to set your Ditra.

I have never used Keraflor and never will. Kerabond is a premium thinset and that's whats sold at my supplier.

You got that right,it was $15 for KeraBond grin that was already in my truck.

Not Keraflor like i thought I bought before

only did I realize it when I spent $27 for White Kerabond and put the bag in the back of the tuck. crazy

The Karasic was $70 for the Jug to make it modified,WOW

I spoke to the Owner of Ditra last year and asked him what products he recommends for his products,He Said Ditraset and Mapie products(Kerabond/Karasic)

I made a Topic asking where in Ont could you buy Ditraset and then called Bostik, was told the Quebec warehouse had some then told me all 50 bags got destroyed because they past the date.

The only way I could get Ditraset was buy 5 pallets or head to NY and get some.

Since you know a lot about Ditra,What size Trowel do you use for installing the Ditra and what size trowel should I use for setting the 13x13 Tile.

Thanks

(Sorry if the spelling is off and the Grammer,I'm on my Iphone typing this)
