I'm removing linoleum to install tile in my small master bath. I have removed the layers of linoleum and am left with some of the paper backing and glue on the floor. The paper that is left is smooth and very secure to the glue/concrete.

Can I proceed to tile or do I need to remove the paper and/or glue? If removal is necessary, could you suggest a method for removal. I have some Solu-strip made by Crown that I thought might work but didn't know if it would leave an unwanted residue on the concrete.

Thanks for your feedback!

Hi Steve, I can't get your attachments to open for some unknown reason. Are they photos of the floor?

Chemical strippers can leave residues that aren't compatible with the thinset you'll use to set the tile.

The best method for vinyl flooring residue that can't be scraped off is to use a bush hammer. I own one so I can't say for sure, but likely a tool rental place will have one.

Rob Z, would wetting the paper with water help get the paper off?

Robert, if water would get that paper and residue off then that would be great. I haven't seen any floors clean up that easily, but if it is the case for Steve then he could save a lot of aggravation for sure.

Steve, if you can try to repost those photos I would like to see them.

I've used dry ice to remove VCT tiles and glues from wood floors. I put the dry ice pellets in a cookie sheet on the floor. It freezes everything to the point that the glue and vinyl tiles become brittle enough to scrape off. I think the severe cold causes the glue to loosen its bond somehow. Not sure if that would work here.

A word of caution, don't get dry ice on your skin!

There is one company that I know of here in Edmonton that uses dry ice to blast off mold and clean surfaces. I did a google on the subject. Check out www.co2dryiceblaster.com
No idea of the cost.

Several years ago I needed to make some improvements in my Bathroom, including replacing the linoleum flooring with ceramic tile. Originally my wife had suggested the idea of installing ceramic tile in the bathroom, however, I was concerned on having to install an underlayment (such as 1/4" plywood) as well as the ceramic tile. Trying to cut all the jogs around the cabinet, closet, toilet and tub would have been extremely difficult. In addition, I was concerned about raising the bathroom floor 1/2 inch in height.

After a little investigation, I found to my surprise that laying tile over linoleum is possible. It turns out that installing ceramic tile over Linoleum, as long as you prepare the Linoleum floor first, and as long as the subfloor underneath the linoleum is stable.
