Harry have you had to pop out any tiles after when using Kerdi Board?

Does the 3/4 Kerdi Board hold up to this type of re and re?

Where are you finding linear drains for that cheap. I have been installing line drains like crazy and the prices are $500 and up....

I had someone on Terry's site ask me for the old Scluter method of using a standard compression drain with Kerdi. Do you know any info on this procedure?

Thanks.

Hi John
I didn't buy the linear drain, my customer did and I have no idea what they paid. She seemed to remember paying around $300 which I thought was cheap because it seemed good quality. I've used drains close to $700 and I usually get my customers to order direct so they can appreciate its cost.

I've installed the Kerdi membrane with the clamping drain over concrete in basements. I haven't used the system on upper levels of homes. With basement floors it allows me to proceed without demo to the area in the slab around the drain. Here's a link.

Using Kerdi-board on an outside wall of my shower do you still need to install a vapor barrier (6 mill poly) behind the the kerdi-board or is the kerdi-board enough

The Kerdi board will be enough. Just try to seal between the 2 products creating 1 envelope of barrier within the exterior wall.
I personally don't worry if the vapor barrier remains on the exterior wall when using a vapor proof backerboard. If it's there, fine .... if not the board does the trick.

Great info guys. Where can you purchase the Kerdi board and supplies in the Toronto area?

Have you seen the commercial steam shower that was built with Kerdi Board? The board is melting and the paper layer wicking water throughout the entire corner.

Kerdi Board Problem - John Bridge Tile Forum Posting

For starters the steam line should not be tight to the corner like that but what is alarming is the distance the wicking and failing of the Kerdi Board.

Yet another reason to follow the TTMAC's guidelines for proper steam shower construction and use concrete board in your steam showers.

Harry do you know how to check the date codes on Kerdi Board? It seems that back in 2008 there was some issues. I was reading that on the JB link above.

What's your take on this?

How do you seal the wall penatrations with Kerdi and Kerdi Fix?

I love Kerdi Fix and think one tube of that and a little more care and that Steam Shower with the Kerdi Board would not have failed.

Hi John

I haven't used Kerdi board in around 2 years. I was given a bunch to try and then bought some for a few jobs and just decided it was more trouble than it was worth.

Glad to see a pro like you back on the forum.

Thanks Harry.

I've had a chance to call both Schluter USA and Schluter Canada for advice. My Canadian Schluter tech support rep said to call Dale Kempster for steam shower advice and the American rep said that using one of the pipe seals or kerdi and kerdi fix would do the job.

I like the steam housing system from ThermaSol since it flares out from 5/8" brass to a 2 1/8" Brass piece. I've had good success with Noble Sealant 150 with my Noble Seal TS steam shower builds.

Noble Sealant 150 and Kerdi Fix are wonderful products for tricky install work. I'm surprised more people don't use them.
