I have a stand-up shower stall in my house. The house is less than 3 years old I noticed a bit of loose grout and pealing caulk around the base of the shower...when I went to do what I thought would be a minor repair I am finding standing water sitting in the space between the floor tile bed and the wall tiles.

My question is would it not have been a better practice to have the floor tiles running through with the wall tiles set (and fitted) to them?

It looks as though in my case the wall tiles were set to the rough floor then the shower floor was poured inside this and then covered with the floor tiles. Now as the house is a couple of years old the studs are drying out and the house is settling the wall tiles have pulled off the floor and I am left with water sitting on the membrain below!

To make matters worse the water is wicking up the drywall making the bottom two rows of tiles spongy.

Is there a remedy short of ripping it all out and staring over?

Hi Pat
It looks as though there isn't a sloped mud bed UNDER the liner. This causes moisture to collect and eventually wick up your backer board and cause the tile installation to fail. It's also possible that the weep holes are plugged.

My advise would be to start over enabling you to rebuild a properly designed pan.

Sorry Pat, but I don't see a "quick fix" with this job. Lets see what someone else thinks.

That install is all to common in new Homes. Wall tile put on down to the floor area and then Mud floor poured agianst tile walls. You'll have to take apart the shower and re-do from ground up.

Harry. Slope is not the underlying problem here. The tile guy put tile on Guy down to the floor the poured his Shower floor against the tile wall. Sounds like the tile and Gyproc fall into the concrete floor wich is a NO_NO.
