HI all, I started a bathroom project while laid-off, and never finished due to being called back to work (Thank God!)

Anyway, I'm back at it and have sub floor and cbu on floor.(walls also). Problem is, I sistered some of the floor joists due to water damage, and didn't notice that one corner is lowwer, by as much as a 1/4 inch. It's not a big area maybe 2ft. by 2ft, and I was told I could just use thinset as opposed to slc.
Does this sound okay?
Would I just use extra thinset when laying tile, or should I level the corner with it, let it set, then lay tile? Is thinset on top of thiset okay?
Or should I just use a leveling compound for this small area?
Thanks in advance,
Bob

Hi Bob,

Hey neighbor, I used to live in Roseville, 1st house.

First I need to ask if you installed the CBU into fresh thin set.

If the problem is only in that small area, go ahead and flatten the floor with thin set. Let it dry as long as you can before installing the tiles.

Jaz

Thanks Jaz,
Yes the cbu is on fresh thinset. New subfloor, 1/4" backer on thinset, screwed in with the proper screws.

It was my mistake not checking both directions with the straightedge... never noticed the joists tapering off in that direction!
That won't happen again!!

Thanks for the help! Sounds like an easy fix.

Bob

ONe more question though...
When I tape the seams in the CBU on the walls, do the corners normally get taped and mudded, or should the corners get silicone for movement?
(By corners, I mean where the two walls meet.)

Thanks
Bob

Tape and mud those joints. That keeps everything together. But if you're tiling those walls you'll want to use silicone or a color-matched grout caulk as opposed to grouting the corners. Grout will eventually just crack and fall out.
