Hi. I'm wondering if this can be done. I have removed an interior wall between the kitchen and den, about 12 feet. Kitchen has ceramic and den hardwood. I need to install a marble threshold between the hardwood and the ceramic. Both floors are at the exact same level, which is nice. The ceramic tiles butting the wall (wall no longer there) in the kitchen were cut to fit, so that row of 12 inch tiles are now about 10 inch tiles. The only problem I have (that I know of!) is that the cut tiles are not all the exact same size, so I don't have a clean straight edge to butt my marble up against.
The tiles were put down about 18 years ago, I don't think I would ever find more of these tiles. So, is it possible to cut a straight clean edge on the existing tiles while they remain cemented to the floor?

It's certainly possible, but there are two problems with cutting it like that:

1. The dust generated from a angle grinder. Of course, the dust can be cleaned up, it's just a mess.

2. You'll probably end up chipping some if not all of the tile as you cut them. Once you damage them, there's no going back.

How wide is the gap between the wood and tile, and does the wood run perpendicular or parallel to the gap?

Hi.
Dust I can deal with, but chipping the tiles would make for a poor looking threshold.
The wood runs parallel to the gap, and I have more wood so I can add to it if needed to close the gap some. But the gap between the wood and the "not so perfect" tile edge is about 5 inches right now.

I would probably add wood to close the gap and use a T-moulding to cover the last inch or so.

Years ago the T-mouldings would add a toe-stumper to the floor, but now they are available in low-profile while is maybe an 1/8" tall over the floor surface. You can also make your own and stain it to match, or have it made at a cabinet shop. If you make it yourself you can do it in one long piece which might look better than two smaller ones.

While this isn't an ideal solution given the length of the transition, I think it would look better than the marble threshold, in my opinion.

Thanks Kman. I guess there's no real need to put the marble in there. A 1/8" toe-stumper wouldn't be bad, I might be able to make that myself, but I'll see whats available before I go to that trouble. Going this route I would NOT need to cut any of the tiles that were butt to the wall, the uneven tiles are less than 1/4" in difference, the T-moulding should cover any of that. However there is a three foot section where the old doorway was between the two rooms, here the tiles were not cut and are therefore a couple inches longer than the rest! Its always something! I would have to cut those tiles back to match the rest of them. I dont think my T-moulding could manage a 2 inch difference... although it's not impossible if I make it myself! Sure be nice not to have to cut any tiles.
