Hi there: I'm working on putting a shower into a half-bath and have a few questions. We are planning on a finished surface of Flex-Rock rather than tile, so I'm thinking that on top of my DensShield board, I will apply a uniform coat of Thinset to use as a surface to paint the Flex-Rock on. Is this a good idea, or is there a better solution?
I will be starting to build my mortar pan tomorrow and I have read in a few places that the mortar used on top of the membrane is a different type than the mortar used under the membrane and that the mortar used for the curb is different again. Under the membrane is a sand/topping mix but what about above the membrane and on the curb?

Thanks for any help.

Yes there is a better solution, real tile!

I know Flex Rock literature says that it can be applied to any surface with the correct prep and finishing but unfortunately I think the application you want to do would be risky.
To my knowledge,I have never heard or seen this treatment done to a tub/shower.

The choice to do this process, I'm afraid is going to be at your discretion.

I agree with RC. As for your questions: mortar bed over liner is topping mix as well, but the curb should be mortar mix (masonry mix) over galvanized diamond lath. The Lath must be bent to stay in place with no nails, so as not to puncture liner.

Hey thanks for the comeback. I'm glad you mentioned that. According to the "fine folks" at Home Hardware, Flex Rock can be used for showers but since you voiced your concern, I decided to look a little closer and have not been able to find any reference to using it in a shower, specifically. Generally, it does say that it can be used in kitchens, baths and pool decks and that it resists water, mould and mildew. So I will keep looking into that.

So how about the question above regarding the different types of mortar to use in the pan. I do not trust the "fine folks" at Home Hardware or Home Depot. smile

Thanks again wink

Hey Thanks Pistol Pete, you posted while I was writing. So just a Type S mortar for the curb and sand/topping for the rest then eh?

Hey I just noticed you're in Willies Puddle. I'm just up the road in PG wink

Well I just returned from town and spoke with the fine folks at a different Home Hardware and they "wouldn't recommend it" either. So, we're going with tile. I would like to thank you guys for your advice, you likely saved me both money and time. You gotta love the internet eh, it ain't just for porn anymore. lol

Thanks guys! smile
