I am planning on installing a 36x48 cast iron kohler shower base with a singal theshold on one side. I want to add a bench to the back end of the base that will be tiled and be included in the shower inclosure. Has anyone seen this done or is it possible??
Thanks dacoach

I'm trying to picture your layout. Let's skip the bench for now. I've seen & ripped out a bunch of showers with a pre formed base and have always found it's not possible to waterproof the doorway curb. So, where the base ends and the threshold its self when the base is wider than the opening. (you probably didn't follow that, I barely did myself).

Can you post a picture or sketch of the area?

Is this the type of setup you want to do? This is a small acrylic base with the bench at the end.

This is a preform cast iron shower base. 36 wide by 48 deep. If you were standing in the shower facing the shower head, it has a wall flange on the front (shower head wall),left side and back. The right side has a step over curb where the glass door will be. The back side is were I plan to build a 16 inch high by 18 inch deep bench instead of there being a full back wall. The glass inclosure will come down on top of the back of the bench so the bench will be inside the glass inclosure. Basicly exstending the shower area by adding the bench up against the back side of the shower base.. Hope this makes more sence. Sorry I dont have pictures yet I havent started anything yet. Once I figure out how to add a sketch I will. Thanks for your input guys

you got it!!! thats my concept but no tub on the out side of the glass. What do you think? I am using 20x20 porclein tile for the walls and plan on using the same to cover the bench. Any thoughts

I still see it in my post. Not sure why you don't see it.

Is this what your trying to build? The shower pan in my photo can easily be substituted for your cast iron pan. I'm assuming there is going to be a solid wall on the left hand side?

Yes a solid flat wall on the left side. The original pic is back on the forum page. Dont know what happened before. I am purchasing the Koehler base from Lowes. Koehler Model #9026-96 I am not sure if the sales person understands what I am looking for. He said the "theshold" will be on the right side. I am assuming that would be the step over curb. I hope it is!!
I am hoping the other 3 sides will be flanged up to go up against the walls and bench wall. I am glad to see a pic of someone that has done it with a solid base. Wasnt sure if that was possible. If you have any advise I am all ears. Thanks again.

It'll work if the threshold side is completely open as in RC's pics above. If however that side has partial return walls, it will not work long term.
