Hi.

I'm redoing a bathroom/shower I installed about 18 years ago. Held up okay but getting dated.

My plan for the shower is mortar bed, kerdi drain and kerdi on the pan and six? inches up the wall, then liquid membrane on the CBU walls to overlap the kerdi membrane. I think I am comfortable doing all the above.

The bathroom floor is giving me pause to think. Right now the floor is t&g 2x6 spanning no greater than 16 inches between joists. Above the t&g I have 1.25 inch of height maximum that I would like bring my finished floor tile to. My floor tile will be 0.25 inch thick porcelian tile. What would be a reasonable subfloor between the t&g and tile to acheive this height. Waterproofing is a moderate to low concern. Could I use some liquid membrane on the floor at least near the shower exit and toweling off area?

My shower and floor tiles are the same--discontinued 12x12 porcelian tile which I bought at the fire sale price of $0.25 for 300 sq feet (less than 1 cent per sq foot). However, no trim pieces were available. Now I am wondering how to finish the tile field off at the edge where they will transition to the drywall. Is it possibile to grind a radius or bevel into the porcelian tile and apply some kind of paint or other finish? I have an inexpensive wetsaw.

Schluter makes a variety of tile edge to suit practically every installation. many tiles also have one glazed edge, sometimes that edge is nice enough to leave showing.

You don't necessarily need CBU for your shower. With good waterproofing you can have regular drywall in there.

You can screw two layers of exterior grade fir plywood to your t&G to achieve the desired height. Just re-screw the t&G and sand it as flat as possible to avoid voids and squeaks. or you can build a mortar bed as described on the home page of this site. you can waterproof all or part of the floor.

With only 1.25" of height to work with, two layers of subfloor over the T&G may not be possible unless it's a direct bond, i.e. no tile backer.

I would use a single layer of 3/4" or 5/8" ply screwed to the T&G, Ditra, then tile. That should get you pretty close to 1.25".

I normally install on plywood with modified thinset, so that's what I meant. If you are using ditra, then Kman has your answer. The trouble with tile is that there are a few different ways to do it.
