I am a novice DIY who is exploring various options for creating a watertight shower base and enclosure. It appears that the Schluter line is highly recognized and used so I will go in that direction. Specifically, can the Schulter underlayment product be used over plywood as the first step for the shower base? It doesnt appear to be viable for membrane protection vs. their thin membrane product, am I correct? Finally, is it advisable to use one of the waterproofing products that are applied like paint over the cement board walls or other seams? Sorry if I am not using correct terminology but hopefully you get the point of my questions. Many thanks in advance. BTW: Looks like a very informative forum and glad I found it!

Hi Rufus
For a showerpan you'll need a mortar bed first, formed and sloped with a Kerdi drain installed .... allow to set and then install Kerdi membrane.
Look at some of the showerpans in this link to get an idea.

Harry,

Thanks. I purchased the membrane and Kerdi drain today and I spotted a shower in your link which very closely resembles what I hope to achieve. I am glad to have discovered this forum and really appreciate the timely response and information. There are so many products out there but the Schluter/Kerdi ones appear to be my best bet (at least I hope so)

I purchased the Shulter membrane product and plan to install it per the mfg. instructions. I am ready to do the underlayment now, can I use the Shulter Ditra (the one designed for tile floors) as the underlayment layer or should I use felt and lattice and then do per-slope with the Kerdi membrane
