I'm installing ceramic tile in the bathtub area and have a interesting dilemma... using thinset on the Ditra is the preferred method. Question: where and how do you set up the first row - at the bathtub edge, or attach a level piece of wood into the wall and then apply the first row? If you put a hole in the Ditra for this purpose doesn't this compromise the membrane?
Thanks guys for your thoughts!

John

I fasten a straight edge to the wall with a few screws and fill the holes left with a small dab of clear silicone.

Schluter has a caulking material called Kirdi Fix but no one stocks it. You can special order it thru any Schluter dealer.

By the way I hope you ment to say Kerdi for the walls as Ditra is not used for walls.

Thanks RC.
You're right - Ditra for the floor, Kerdi for the walls.
I'll get it right one of these days! ;\)

Hey, I've used Ditra on walls before....for a granite shower stall. It worked really well too. Schluter said there wasn't any reason not to, since they stucco over the stuff on the outside of buildings...and they put other heavy stones on it outside also. There is a fastener that holds it though...a screw with a big washer. All screws and seams are covered with Kerdi to waterproof...and....yeah I know..why not just use the Kerdi in the first place! :p ;\) \:D

Bri ... didn't Ron use Ditra on that sign over his store? They were heavy tiles he used too .... right over the entrance.

Yeah ,we used Ditra over Wonderboard on 2x4 framing at 12" centers. Then set 12 x 24 polished porcelain on that.We used the Ditra(and Kerdi on the seams)on the canopies to prevent efflorescence, stress on the tile from contraction/expansion issues due to the effects of the sun shining on it and moisture and such.Been through 2 harsh winters, still looks great.(aboout 300 sq.ft.)
