I have to rip out a tile wall that is in our bathroom and will replace the tub and tile at the same time. I don't have a problem with the tub installation or plumbing fixtures. However, I'm a bit confused about the "green board".

Do I need to install the green board to the studs, then backer board to the green board, then mortar, then tile? Or can the mortar and tile be applied directly to the green board? Your help would be greatly appreciated!! (I'm doing the work tomorrow)

P.S. If I haven't made it clear, the tile is being replaced around the bathtub. \:\)

Hi
You'll probably get a few different answers. but I would say use concrete board instead of green board..the 1/2 inch thick concrete board can be fastened directly to the studs, and it will be the same thickness as any adjoining drywall you have in the rest of the room. Then use the mortar and the tile. \:\)

Thanks so much for the reply. I can't seem to get the same answer twice from Home Depot (cringe).

Should I use black felt behind the cement board as well?

Thanks again!

Sure..either that, or plastic sheeting...either one will act as a moisture barrier to help protect the studs and insulation(if you have any)

Thanks Bri,

I got the old bathtub out, and the new subfloor, new insulation and vapour barrier and new bathtub and plumbing is in. How critical is it to leave space between the backerboard/greenboard and the wall or another piece of backerboard? \:\) This is fun! Hmmmm wait until the tiling! Is there a chat section around here that people go to?

Thanks once again!

Looks like you're in good hands with Bri's advice snowman. \:\)
Spacing isn't a real concern although I always like to leave enough gap (1/8")to allow the thinset to squeeze through.

The best time to use the chat-room for quicker answers is later in the evening, or ask here for a time to meet up with an installer. The link is on the home page.
