Last week I had someone tiling a tub surround.
In the joint where the tiles meet the tub, he
applied grout instead of caulking. I asked him to
remove the grout and put caulking. Instead he
put the caulking on top of the grout and told me
this the way it's done.
It seems to me that in long term this will not resist water. I also have to reglaze my tub.
They normally remove the caulking to do a good
job. Right now there is not much caulking to remove.
Please I need some advice.

Hi Jean
A lot of installers caulk right over the grout but although it isn't a good idea along the tub area ... it isn't crucial. If you want you can very easily scrap out the grout and caulk with a small putty knife and bristle brush .... then re-caulk.
Good luck.

Hi
You're right..the guy doing the glazing will take it out anyway..and clean it up..but I guess you could save him some time by taking it out your self. \:\)

A mis-representation that folks often have is that a proper caulking job has to be a thick, unsightly, 3/4" smeared bead to do the job. That isn't true. A nice, fine, tidy, professional bead is all that it takes to keep water from entering, and if applied properly it is fine to caulk over the grout joint as long as the grout joint is just as tidy. If I have the time to grout first and let it dry good, I prefer to caulk over the grout, as it acts as a "backer" so that the caulk doesn't suck into the jointleaving it uneven looking, and the chance of pinholes.
