Tile setting is an art and anyone who can do it right and make it look good

is an artist. My Uncle Jim set tile for 20 years and I had a chance to tour a

few of the jobs he did , mostley mansions in Phoenix, AZ. Massive floors of

granite, marble.Giant walk in showers, spill over pools. Wow!!!Some of you

guys must do pretty good because he now lives on a 36 foot boat down in

Mexico.Me, I'm an elevator mechanic.Hammered on those babys for 24 years.But

I could never escape my love for a great tile job. When I walk into some of

those high rise buildings to fix an elevator sometimes I just stand in the

lobby with my jaw hanging just looking at the tile work till one of those

security people ask me if they can be of help. Most people walk by and never

give it a second glance,me, Im gonna start taking pictures!Anyway,Im redoing

my whole bathroom and I was thinking about a mosaic ceiling, some nice trim,

a large field halfway down the walls, more trim, a smaller field the rest of

the way ending with a mosaic border and some pattern on the floor. After that

the kitchen. My wife says Im trying to turn the place into the Hilton. I say

why not.Such is the power of tile. So, is there a book, a website, anything

that can give me choice of patterns and designs or do I just have to buy a

bunch of tile and play around with it like a jigsaw puzzel.I want to do it

right the first time.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and have a

Happy New Year!!! Rick.

I say go for it. I just did our bathroom (it was my first tile job), and though I didn't mosaic the ceiling, I did throw a couple of tromp l'oie (sp?) potted orchids on the walls, plus some hanging palm fronds. They are made of broken pottery, and tiled around. They lok pretty great, if you ask me. The other thing I did was to use pebbles from the beach to make the decorative border and edged it with thin strips of the black slate I had left over from the floor. My bathroom won't win any awards as a professional tiling job, but it pleases me greatly every time I go into it. Plus it didn't cost much more than a straight tile job, though it took lots more time.
