I have read quite a bit on here about tiling a shower. This is the new remodeling task my husband and I are attempting. First off we pulled up all the particle board underlayment that was over plywood on the floor in the bath area. He then applie 3/4" plywood panels to floor and nailed in place. Now over this we plan to thinset mortar 1/4" cement board over this thruout the whole bath area. Then tape with recommneded tape and thinset joints. Now I know several places recommned the felt and metal lath but that seems to be when going directly over plywood for the shower pan. Since we are going directly over cement board I would assume we go directly to the pre-slope. Is this correct.?
On walls, we have studs with insulation. I was told to add felt or plastic over these then directly add 1/2" cement board, tape and mud joints. Should we also pain on Redgard or something over then entire thing before thinsetting tiles?
My husband also had a question about what holds the drain in place. We bought the 2 part one specifically for shower pans. Does the mortar hold it in place?
