I have a 38 x 38 inch neoangle shower and want to install a kerdi preslope base. Drain is 15 inches from the corner in my shower. The 48 sq inch kerdi will fit after trimming but I think the wall/floor joint will be higher/lower on one side instead of level all around. Can I use more thinset on one side to elevate the base?

I am replacing a failed shower in my 7 year old house. You have no idea how much help you pros are. I was going to replace the shower pan exactly as I found the original , but reading this forum I discovered that a preslope was not installed, just a sandy fill on top of the liner on top the floor. I have pieced together what went wrong by using your info. My shower stunk. It was mold from the groolsh not draining. Water leaked behind the liner as it was nailed to the studs 2 inch above floor level, but below floor tile level. Now I am going kerdi. Thanks for the help and info. Are there no repercussions to fear for doing poor quality work?
Thanks I appreciate you guys.

You should be doing a drypac mortar base.

Hi Will
Glad the information here has been helpful.

I think you might create an unlevel pan if you do that.
Those pre-fab Kerdi pans are nice, and they're easy to install. But they don't always fit every application.
I agree with Randall that a mortar bed is the ultimate .... BUT, you can use the Kerdi kits. When you trim edges to make them fit, try to take equal amounts off both or all sides so that the perimeter height remains constant. Also ... instead of trying to add mortar under the foam kits to raise them ... add it to the top instead. Try to be neat and apply a smooth application where needed.

The problem with trimming the prefab base is my drain is offset. 15" x 15 " from the corner so I cannot trim evenly from each side or end.
I will install the tarpaper/lathe mesh and use drypac mortar with kerdi drain and membrane. All this selecting the correct thinset and mortar material is confusing. What brand/type drypac mortar should I buy for the preslope bed and what type thinset goes underneath the kerdi when laying it and on top of the kerdi membrane when tiling.
Just question of curiosity. When I tore my shower apart the tile bonding material at the shower curb was wet like molasses and a lot of the wall tiles I could peel off by hand, the bonding material underneath was soft, rubbery like slicone sealant. it had been put on with a trowel, the trowel rows were there. is this what thinset is and do you think the tiles fell off the wall because of not being pushed on hard enough or the gout was not sealed?
Thanks
Will

Thinset is a cement mortar. What you've described is probably mastic which is wrong to use in ANY wet area.
It was put in wrong and most likely with the wrong materials ... that's why it's failing.

There are lots of photos linked off the main page to help you understand how showers are built.
