....Onto my new problem (challenge).

Last May I started out re-doing my bedroom's ensuite bathroom (simple toilet - sink scenario in a 5' X 5' space).

I gutted the whole bathroom and had to rebuild the subfloor (thank you for this forum's advice).

I've installed Ditra and am ready for tiling. I plan to use tile as my baseboard around the bathroom's perimeter.

After looking closely, what seemed like a decent to good drywall installation (and joint finishing) is actually not so great since the walls are "wavy" and installing rigid baseboard tiles may not be wise (1/4 inch gap in the center of the wall is evident when I hold a 4' straight edge against it).

I'm thinking of correcting the gap at the base using drywall mud.

Specifically:

1. What would be the best way to rectify this situation? I have 2 walls with this problem.
2. Can I go ahead and install the floor tile regardless of the method of correcting the wall gap situation.
3. When installing the floor tile, would you recommend having the floor tile go underneath the drywall or have the tile edge aligned with the drywall face? I would think that this would influence my decision to add the "Kerdi Band" along the wall-floor (Ditra) surface.

As always, thank you for your feedback!!!

If your installing a standard paint grade wood base then there's no need to do anything with the walls unless the wavy baseboard is unsightly.

Otherwise it will be necessary to skim the wall out to approx 2' above the subfloor with drywall mud then prime and paint again.

There should be a gap of 1/8" between the tile edge and the wall edge unless the drywall is up higher than the height of the floor tile. In that case you can be flush to the wall edge.

I wouldn't bother with the Kerdi band unless your planing on the floor seeing a lot of water.

RC said exactly what I would do, But use a pole sander & straight edge to make sure that you keep the wall area flat & true (long & gentle strokes to avoid digging holes). For a 5' x5' space this shouldn't be to time consuming or much of a pain. Good luck.

Thank you gentlemen for your quick response!!

Two more short questions if I may:

1. Could I Set the tiles before working on the wall (would this have any impact on the work on the wall to be done?)?

2. If I have the choice of setting my tile underneath the drywall (i.e. to avoid cutting tiles) should I set them past the wall underneath the drywall or should I trim the tiles and set them flush to the wall as you mentioned in your post below.

Thanks for your time & input!!!

Yes but you will need to protect the floor while you work on the walls.

As I said before, you can do it that way as long as there is a 1/8" minimum gap to any fixed surface IE: wall studs, drywall or cabinets
