I've been installing tiles in Toronto for about 3 years now and I've had it!
Last week I went to price a customer(kitchen/hallways/foyer).
So as usual, I asked what type of tiles he'd be using and he points to the ones on the floor (porcelain). So i price it accordingly... $3sq/ft (many many cuts and 30min travel time e/way).

So what happens?..I show up today and he had 12x24 slabs of limestone. I almost had a stroke!
I told him the price of this changes dramatically. So, After about 1 hr of them freaking out and thinking i was cheating them. I grabbed my tools, passed by Timmy's, got home and quit working in Toronto.

I'm A HEADING WEST BOYS!

Is it me? or are ppl reeeeally getting cheap on paying someone to do a job job ONCE.
I mean ppl WONT pay the extra money to use CB and Redguard in their shower are. They think that greenboard is fine, since it's what builders still use.

Hi there, there are days when I feel like going back to Calgary to work why?? money is A LOT BETTER a sq ft...like $4-5 for ceramic etc. They pay well for installing extra's like metals (transitions etc). I love the water and the nicer seasons. All people do in Alberta is work...and make good money of course. You will notice that your tile tool supplies are way more expensive there too. Best of luck to you...Mark

I know I was offered work in Calgary, for double of what i make here. But leaving the family for a few months of the year would be too hard.
Don't get me wrong, I'm still living in Toronto, but simply NOT taking anymore job within the city!

It's too bad that even with the original tile, 3 bucks a foot is crap. Dang, in the 70's you could get 4 to 5 bucks. High end work is the way to go....you can get decent money for that. Or commercial...at least for 3 bucks, they dont care what it looks like, just that its done.
