Hi all, has anyone herd or used a product from BENGARD called Protegga. It is a underlayment like Ditra. I was wondering if it would do the same job as a replacement for Ditra.

Hi Joe

Yes, I've used it. It works pretty much the same as Ditra. The difference is though....no warranty. So yeah it's cheaper, but at least with Ditra you get a 5 year warranty...so in the long run, it may not be cheaper. ;\)

thanks Bri yes I noticed that it Ditra had a 5 year warranty. I also noticed that Rino board had a 20 year warranty. If you were instaling tiles in a kitchen after strengthening the sub floor would you use Rino board. Ditra or Protegga.

or would you use something else?

Well, I don't like Rhino board much. It's very brittle. If you get too close to an edge with a fastener, it tends to split or break a chunk off. It's similar to Hardiboard...but Hardi is softer and doesn't break as easily. Not that I like Hardiboard either though. ;\)

The Protegga worked fine for me, but Ditra has a great track record and Schluter is a great company that stands behind it's products.

Still, all of the cement board products work well...Wonderboard, Hardiboard, Durock, Permabase...etc, etc. You really can't go wrong with what ever choice you make, because if you install them as directed, they do the job for you. \:\)
