Schluter's Kerdi waterproof membrane and drain system is the best for a steam shower. There are several kerdi showers linked from the main page of this site for you to examine .... also Schluter has a link on our links page.
thanks, that system seems substantial. what do you think of the paint on water proofing systems? would you waterproof the entire enclosure, walls and ceiling? myles

For a true steam shower, a sheet membrane such as Schluter Kerdi is the best substrate to protect the walls from vapour penetration.
I'm not sure which paint-on membrane is rated for use in saunas and steam rooms. There might be one that has the same vapour protection as Kerdi.I know that the liquid membrane that I use frequently for wet areas is not recommended as a barrier for steam vapours.
Ron, I think Laticrete 9235 requires an additional vapour barrier behind the backerboard when used for steam showers .... not sure about the others. I agree, Kerdi is best for this application.
allright i am sold on the kerdi. when i ask questions at the local tile shop the scratch their heads and read the brochure to me. i am glad to find folks with actual experience to talk to, thanks. myles
