I am replacing a fiberglass shower insert from the 70's with a custom shower. After removing the insert I found the drain(1 1/2" copper pipe) extended about a foot from the hole in the slab to the right to center and upward 4" to fit the drain in the bottom of the insert. I have purchased the Kerdi drain and you can see my problem I'm sure. The Kerdi is 2" and my copper drain pipe is 1 1/2". Short of bursting out the concrete and running new drain pipe do I have any other options? How about a reducer? Can I convert copper to ABS?

Can you see a copper p-trap?

You can install a 2" to 1-1/2" ABS reducer into the bottom of the Kerdi drain. This will then accept a change to 1-1/2" ABS wich will end up joining to the existing copper plumbing by a rubber transition sleeve. Make sure the sleeve is for 1-1/2 copper to 1-1/2 ABS.

Thanks! No, I cannot see a p-trap. I assume it is in the slab because I get no septic tank odor or gases. Wouldn't I get those if there wasn't a p-trap?

Also with all these connections I will be coming up quite a distance from the slab. How do you recommend handling this? Can I fill it with concrete or would a plywood platform be better? I was wondering about the rubber sleeve and how it would be affected by the concrete if I fill in with that. Thanks!

The transition insert for the Kerdi drain is flush to the bottom of the drain. You may want to use a 90 deg ABS ell which fits into the ABS transition.
A copper/1-1/2 ABS adapter is also available.

Can you take a photo of the rough-in plumbing area and post it on the forum or e-mail it to me directly?

The sleeve should be fine in the concrete.

You can host your photo to an image hosting site and then copy and paste it into your forum post.
