I am buliding a 3'x5' shower with a concrete block seat at one end. I would like to make the bench the full width of the shower but I am concerned about the possibility of water sitting on top of the marble curb top between the bench and the door (full opening). Since the curb top will slope into the seat will there be problems at the joint. What precautions should be taken or should I scrap the idea and make a corner seat, I know that would be easier but it wouldn't look as good or be as functional. The shower will have an 8" rian head in the center and a hand held at the end opposite the seat.

The seat should be built so that the curb will run into it.The shower glass will then be installed onto the top of the seat and also the curb.

Wish I could show a picture.Basically the outside wall of the curb is flush with the outside wall of the seat.

Thanks Ron for your advice, what you say makes sense and will eliminate the problems that I was thinking about. By continuing the marble cap up the edge of the seat and along the top of it (under the glass wall) it should make a nice finish.

Further to the seat question, is there any advantage to setting the seat on a flat base and sloping the seat top, or would it work best to build the seat on the pre-sloped pan? I plan to install the membrane under the seat and up the wall behind. Good or bad idea? Since the end of the seat will form the outside wall, what is the best way to waterproof that area with no curb to attach the membrane to?

alleycat, have a look at a shower bench I installed recently: http://www.ontariotile.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=4;t=000037

I used 1/4" per foot for slope, and do not experience any pooling, and the slope is indiscernible.

Ralph.

Thanks Ralph for the info. your shower/steam room looks great. I've planned to transfer the 1/4"/ft slope of the floor pan to the seat by installing the blocks on it. Since the seat end will form an outside wall, my concern is whether any waterproofing is necessary on the blocks.(the membrane is under and behind them). What about coating the blocks with redgard or laticrete 923S? Also, is thinset over the blocks adequate for tile attachment?
