Hi,

Where can I buy this foam backer rod that I hear about? It's used in movement joints to apply caulking onto.Never used it.Don't know where to buy it in Toronto and surroundings.Anyone know?

Hi Ron
You can sometimes get it from a window and door/glass company...but I think you can also get it from Mcnaughton-Brooks(which I think is Masterbuilders these days...just down the street from Olympia Tile..on the same side as Olympia's clear out center....maybe even Domus would have it(next door)

Hi Tileprof,

I'd always heard of it but could never find it even after extensive calling and searching for years.

I always use Schluter's Dilex for field joints. At perimeter joints against masonry I would fill them with either silicone or urethane caulk.Would be easier to do with backer rod, then caulking.

Back from Arizona,Tileprof?

Steven,

A lot of people don't know about backer rod. I only found out about it a couple years ago.

Seems like only yesterday, though . . .

Hi Mike
Backer rod is a foam rod that is used to fill a gap the is too large to fill with caulking alone. Some control joints in a concrete slab go down quite a way, and to fill this with caulking would take many, many tubes. The backer rod is stuffed into the joint, down far enough to be hidden, but leaves 1/4 to a 1/2 inch space for caulking. It comes is lots of different sizes, depending on the size of the crack you need to fill. It comes on a roll, just like rope..only it's foam.
