Hey eveyone,

I was just looking for some opinions on what to charge for a job that I am doing. It is about a thousand feet of granite and marble. Two areas have an Absolute black granite border with the middle being Crema Marfil on a diagonal with green granite dots about every four feet. The other area is about 15x25 with the Absolute border, but in the middle imagine an X from corner to corner of the border with the top and bottom part of the X being Crema Marfil and the sides of the X being the green granite... all the joints lining up. I don't know how else to explain it without drawing it.
Now, usually I get around $5.50-$6.50 sq. ft. for stone work, just plain ol' straight running stone, but this here is going to take a lot of time.I've already started the job, and in two days only 240 sq. ft. of stone done.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks.....Scrap

Hi Scrap

Where is the job and what is the substrate like?

It sounds well below the price per foot (I'm guessing about $10 a foot) that my friend Jim is using for granite and marble jobs of a similar size in the DC area. And with all the cuts and the inserts, I would think you should add another buck a foot.

I can run this scenario past him to get some pricing info for you.

Rob,

Thanks for responding so quickly. The job is an office building entry, elevator lobby, hallway and rear entrance in Frederick MD. It is over new concrete, I've already applied membrane over the control joints, and it is fairly level. I checked the floor with my laser, and it is pretty good, I'll have to build up here and there, but that is expected. I don't have to supply the thin-set or Schluter strips, just labor.

Thanks again....Scrap

Hi Scrap

Frederick is probably far enough away to be a bit lower than what Jim can get for work in Old Town Alexandria and DC. I'll still check with him and see what he says.

It sounds like you at least have easy access to the job....no parking problems or stairs to run up and down.

BTW-I started on that Chevy Chase job I told you about. I've got the demo completed and am waiting for my MHIC license to come through. The people in Baltimore are driving me nuts!

Still continuing with the job today, and got about another 150sq.ft....without knowing how much the job pays! Dang I hate that! The owner of the company that I am subbing the job from came out today to check things out, and I asked him how much he figured on paying for the labor on this job, and he gave me that old " I'll take care of you, you know that" reply. I have known this guy for 7 or 8 years, and have been doing work for him for the last 2 years, and have done several jobs without knowing how much they pay before I started. He's always paid what I've asked, and has never gotten over on me, but on the other hand, I don't want to cut myself short either.
Rob, I hope everything goes well with your MHIC liscence, so you can continue with your job in Chevy Chase. There seems to be a lot of work in our area right now, and mustn't be a lot of capable mechanics to do it all. The phone has been ringing off the hook. Does it seem like that to you , also?

Well,take it easy.......Scrap

Hi Scrap

I spoke to Jim today...he would price it at about $10 a foot with no substrate prep, with at least another buck or so a foot for the fancy layout and the inserts.

I'm not a good one to reference because I have never done a single floor that big and don't work off of a price per foot basis.

You started this one without knowing a price? I hope this guy is good to you on this one...sounds like you could end up mighty at with what he considers "to be taking care of you". We have all heard that one before!

Plenty of work around here. Do you have a MHIC?

Hey Rob,

That's about what I was hoping to get, $10 or so. Thanks for asking Jim.

No, I don't have my MHIC. I try to do mostly commercial work and some new homes, so if I do do home-owner work it's usually subbing through another company, so I go off of their MHIC.

Thanks again.....Scrap

Hey Rob,

I just got paid for that job, and the owner did take care of me pretty fair....$10 it was. Thanks for the help.
