what is a reasonable price for an installer to charge for tub surround? back wall is approx 5x5, 2 side walls are 3x5.the existing surround has to be ripped out (green board with tiles applied with mastic led to failure after only one year). new tub surround to be done with cement backer board and tiles cemented in. not sure of what we will replace tiles with but more concerned with labour price at this point. we also discussed the idea of taking out the tub and replace it with a complete shower unit. the tub, even with it being only a year old, we believe was a cheap one as it is no longer a bright white- kind of off-white now.

Let's say the tile is a simple ceramic tile 8x10 or so,and he'll be removing the old panels and tile and install cement backer board...I'd guess about $1200.That would include the backer board,thinset mortar,grout,etc and labour and removal of waste.

It's hard for me to guess at it from here,but if it is a straightforward installation without surprises,I would think that's a fair price.

the tiles are 4x4 installed over cbu with thinset.does that change the price?

I'd do it for £800.

Bri, what is that worth in your town? I'd post what I've been charging lately but I don't want to embarase(sp) myself.

There are various ways of installing tile which start at about $3.00 psf for simply gluing the tiles to an existing surface.

I never give prices over the phone and besides, it's much better for you to have a few estimates from contractors who describe in detail how they're going to proceed. Then you can compare prices and work description.

The bottom line is....The best price does not mean the best job.
